Whole30: What Is It?

Yesterday I started a Whole30. I am super excited about this 30 day challenge and what it can do for my body.

I thought I would share a little introduction to share this awesome program with anyone who is interested.

 

What is the Whole30?

From the Whole30 Intro page

“Certain food groups (like sugar, grains, dairy and legumes) could be having a negative impact on your health and fitness without you even realizing it. Are your energy levels inconsistent or non-existent? Do you have aches and pains that can’t be explained by over-use or injury? Are you having a hard time losing weight no matter how hard you try? Do you have some sort of condition (like skin issues, digestive ailments, seasonal allergies or fertility issues) that medication hasn’t helped? These symptoms may be directly related to the foods you eat – even the “healthy” stuff. So how do you know if (and how) these foods are affecting you?

Strip them from your diet completely. Cut out all the psychologically unhealthy, hormone-unbalancing, gut-disrupting, inflammatory food groups for a full 30 days. Let your body heal and recover from whatever effects those foods may be causing. Push the “reset” button with your metabolism, systemic inflammation, and the downstream effects of the food choices you’ve been making. Learn once and for all how the foods you’ve been eating are actually affecting your day to day life, and your long term health.”

The Rules:

  • Eat Real Food.

  • Don’t Eat:

    • Added sugar of any kind- real OR artificial. Includes: maple syrup, honey, agave nectar, coconut sugar, Splenda, Equal, Nutrasweet, xylitol, stevia, and more.
    • Alcohol, even when used for cooking.
    • Grains. This includes corn, wheat, rye, barley, buckwheat, oats, rice, millet, and ‘pseudo-grains’ like quinoa.
    • Legumes. These are beans of all kinds, peas, chickpeas, lentils, and peanuts. Soy also falls into this category – soy sauce, miso, tofu, tempeh, edamame, and all ‘hidden’ soy into foods (like lecithin).
    • Dairy. Any and all. Milk, cheese, yogurt, kefir, and cream. Clarified butter//ghee is the exception to this.
    • White Potatoes. They admit that this is more of a psychological thing, but the focus is to change your habits to a healthier eating style and improve the hormonal impact of your food choices. Excluding white, red, purple, Yukon gold, and fingerling potatoes furthers this goal.
    • Carageenan, MSG, and sulfites.
    • ‘Healthified’ Paleo baked goods, desserts, or junk foods. The point of the plan is to change your habits, and if you simply try to eat the same way but with ‘healthy’ versions, you are missing the point.
  • The most important rule of all: no stepping on a scale or taking measurements during the Whole30.

So, no weighing yourself, analyzing body fat or taking comparative measurements during your Whole30. (We do encourage you to weigh yourself before and after, however, so you can see one of the more tangible results of your efforts when your program is over.)”

Valentine’s Day + My Best Friend

Friday, Valentine’s Day, started off as normally as usual. I woke up, showered, ate, and got ready for a day of work. Sort of. Classes at Furman were actually cancelled through 1 pm on Friday and my last class is usually at 12:30. I still had to go into the lab in the morning. I usually go on Friday afternoons, but I figured I might as well get it done earlier, and free up my Valentine’s afternoon!

After lab, I had a quick Dining Hall lunch with my roommate. We chatted and laughed before she headed off to see her boy for the weekend. I am the only 1 out of my 4 roommates who is dating a boy at our school, so everyone was gone this weekend.

I did some email catch up, then headed over to the gym for a workout. I did 10 minutes on the Elliptical and 40 minutes on the Arc trainer. Simple and quick.

Then it was time to shower, change, and get ready for the big Valentine’s date.

NMK and I went to went to the Velo Fellow, a pub-esque restaurant. We were surprisingly seated right away, without a reservation! We ordered a brie appetizer, and I followed that up with Pecan-Encrusted Tilapia. It was amazing. The boy chose the “Eastern Delight” which was a tomato-curry with chicken and rice. Delicious!

After dinner, we walked around downtown Greenville for a while, just chatting and enjoying the evening. It was the perfect date.

The fun continued back in my apartment with our first {annual?} Valentine’s bake off. NMK and I both baked a dessert {in secret!} and then tasted them together! We wrote down our votes on index cards and then counted the ballots. It was….. a tie! We each voted for the other person. Too cute , at least we know we’re not selfish!

what finals look like.

Finals are over guys! I know it’s been a loooong week and I am just glad to be home and free to breathe//not worry about school {except those grades that still aren’t out ha!}

a quick overview of finals– and I’ll be back tomorrow with more regular posting! I am so excited to share the Christmas season and my half marathon training with you guys!

Workouts–

I stuck to mainly Elliptical and Arc workouts this week– it’s easier for me to do intervals on them– and get in and out of the gym fast. I know working out during finals can seem impossible, but it really is an amazing stress relief. Plus, did you know that working out increases your short term memory? Score! {so do it right after studying!}

There were 2 days when I only got a minimal workout, but even just a 10 minute run as a study break helped wake me up, improve my mood, and re-energize me for more studying!

After a low key night with the roomies Saturday, Sunday morning started off with lots of fun– brunch with the boy!

Yesterday was a CRAZY day. I was in the ER {not for myself} until 1 am. But… let’s rewind.

The morning started off well with some eggs, spaghetti squash, bell pepper, and roasted red pepper hummus.

After morning classes, I had a mini lunch date with NMK at Atlanta Bread Company. He wasn’t feeling well, so I wanted to grab him some soup, but we decided just to eat together instead! I’m not complaining- weekday dates are such a treat.

^I went with half and half- Champagne Brie Salad and Garden Vegetable Soup. It was scrumptious, but not quite as filling as I had hoped. I didn’t eat the bread {because I’m not eating gluten} but I’m sure that would have filled me up.^

At 8 pm– I ended up taking my roommate to urgent care. She was having a heart issue all day and has a large family history of heart disease. Urgent Care didn’t do ANYTHING, so we took her over to the ER just to check everything out. It all ended up fine– just a late night! I am glad she’s ok, that’s all that matters!

Y’all- I’m not going to lie. This week is INSANE. Between work, schoolwork, multiple birthdays, a test Friday, and leaving for the entire weekend…. it’s not pretty. But, you just have to make the best of it right?! And I’m incredibly excited for my weekend, so that’s a little motivation 🙂 here’s a quick view of the past few days:
